Environmental friendly farming

About the Implementing organization

Name: Muchinga General Enterprises Limited

Country: Zambia

Year of establishment: 2011

Type of organization: Private Company in Mafinga  prospering with  rural smallholder farmers

Description

The solution is for the rural community to have guaranteed market of cereal and legume crops throughout the year and take farming as source for earning income unlike cutting trees for charcoal burning which affect the climate change. To motivate smallholder farmers in the rural to increase production of food so that they have food security at the household level and thereby reduce poverty. To preserve our nature by the rural community. To create sustainable permanent jobs for the youths and women in the rural. The rural community to adapt to drought caused by climate change. This action is innovative in the sense that the rural smallholder farmers will have guaranteed market of crops at the local rural unlike moving long distances in search of where to sell their crops. It is also reducing the gap between the poor and the rich in the sense that the bulk crops needed by the bulk buyers and processors have to be collected from the rural by the buyer unlike the poor smallholder farmer traveling long distances to find where to sell the crops. It is also making the rural smallholder farmers to have have access to innovations available like solar water pump systems for them to have access to piped water unlike moving long distances in search of water. This saves time for women and girls to concentrate on other activities like studying.

Environmental Impacts

The environmental impact is that nature is preserved like reduction of cutting of trees for charcoal as source of income by smallholder farmers in the rural by concentrating on farming as source of income because of the guaranteed market of crops at the local rural. Poaching of wildlife is reduced because the rural community have guaranteed market of crops at the local rural level which they have taken as business for source of income.

Sustainable Development Impacts

The impacts for sustainable development elements are more permanent jobs created by continuous farming by the local rural community.Poverty being reduced in the rural areas. The rural community having clean piped water to reduce work for women and girls moving long distances in search for water because of using renewable energy like solar water pump systems to pump water for household use as well as for irrigation. Reduction of cutting down of trees by the rural communities. Reducing the gap between the poor rural and the rich by making the bulk buyers and processors of crops buying the bulk crops at the local rural unlike the poor smallholder farmers moving long distances in search of where to sell the crops. Nature being preserved and managed in the most sustainable way.

Scalability

The action could be expanded to a national scale at the rural if led by passionate leader who wants to prosper together with the rural community and are willing to live there permanently. If funds could be sourced we are expand to Central, Northern Provinces of Zambia and work with the rural community to continuously produce food and preserve nature by having permanent constructed warehouses for storage of crops purchased from smallholder farmers. Each operation center in the rural set up to have e- commerce facility so that smallholder farmers could transact with us at the local rural thereby motivating them to grow more different cereal and legume crops to discourage deforestation for charcoal as source of income.

Replicability

The action could be replicated to other parts and other countries if led by a person with the passion like us who want to prosper together with the rural community.Rural community culture have to change by sensitizing them and educating them the importance to preserve nature and also by developing capacity for them to understand the effects if nature is not preserved for the current and future generation. That is why this work requires well cultured leaders to take action in the rural with the rural smallholder farmers. We have to give examples of what is happening in other countries affected by climate change. The action should be supported by funding players in the lead of empowering the rural with innovations available like solar water pump systems so that smallholder farmers in the rural do not just depend on rain for growing crops and that they could be growing crops throughout the year with guaranteed market at the local rural.
