Description

KemBali is a social enterprise that started 2013 as a recycle center and secondhand shop with the mission to engage community working towards zero waste. More than a reduce/reuse/recycle center, it is an educational platform for GS and local community. Kembali has 03 elements:1) collection and sorting center for community waste, which is them picked-up by a local partner for recycling, 2) thrift shop for sale of quality household goods donated by GS community and 3) Reuse-Recycle Center, which turns trash into treasures. Kembali’s main challenge is changing ones mindset and habits related to waste. To face them, it encourages international and local people sort their own waste. By sorting themselves, one makes a connection and starts to think about how to reduced and send less to landfill. Taking responsibility also results in waste coming cleaner and dry, thus more is recycled. In 2016 Kembali started a “Trash for Class (TFC)” program through KKC, whereby 325 local students (aged 6-18) learn English and bring in 5kg of recycling/semester in exchange for classes. Since 2015, over 3,6ton of waste came in from TFC. In 2016 "Kembali ke Sekolah" was rolled out to 06 local schools, reaching around 4k students. Each school has KKC leaders and a local company buys the recycling, with returns staying to school. KKC expect that in 10 years these initiatives lead to every child in the community having the opportunity to speak English and SibangKaja become the greenest village in Bali

Environmental Impacts

Kembaly and the TFC initiative have recycled over 13,3 tons of waste since 2015. Around 3,6t on came from TFC alone. Although these are small numbers compared to the size of the waste problem in Bali, it seeds new habits and offers a solution to one of the most challenging environmental problems in the island, which leads to many other disruptions in environmental resilience. The waste problem impairs largely public health and pollutes the environment. It is estimated that 3.5m tourists leave behind 20,000 m3 of rubbish every day in Bali. The infrastructure for waste is poor and in many areas non-existent. Many people have no choice, but to burn the waste and this is toxic. Pollution runs into rivers and seeps into ground water. Flooding is caused by garbage clogging drains, and the atmosphere can be poisoned by the toxic discharge from trash. Raising awareness and changing habits, starting from oneself is always the first step to envision mitigation of environmental impacts

Sustainable Development Impacts

KemBali’s main impacts to UN Sustainable Development Goals are: 1) TFC is forming g around 350 green leaders that raise awareness in their community and promote better habits as related to waste. For an average of 5 people/family, it means over 1.500 people reached locally; 2) TFC empowers women: 190 girls/138 boys 2) Rolling out “KemBali ke Sekola” to 06 local schools reaches additional 4k students, besides their families; 3) When waste is not collected, the frequency of illness such as diarrhea, doubles. Recycling impacts well being of the community; 4) TFC reduces inequalities related to access to education, and empowers, as kids are given the space to be who they are, to nurture local connections and to have remarkable opportunities for education and exchange; 5) waste brings economic opportunities for disadvantages; 6) KemBali and TFC are examples of schools, community, private companies and government moving from commitments to action and working together for a better world

Scalability

Kembali can further expand its educational platform by having a precious plastic or Fab lab and developmental workshop where students take plastic and turn it into other useful things. Also taking things from nature that go back to nature and making them into useful things like banana fiber into paper, disposable cups plates, etc. On the other side of Kembali would be the Upcycle fashion classes, where students learn some sewing and design skills, marketing, along with bargaining at the secondhand market. Calculating price points, making one off pieces as well as a line of standard Upcycle fashion. The end of each block could be a fashion show and a possible sale at GS shop. Designers can come in and do workshops. Fashion is a huge polluter, not recyclable, and kids should know to make better choices. "KemBali ke Sekolah" program can grow and have other stakeholder join. The platform could be widespread not only to schools, but to local Banjars and all over Indonesia

Replicability

KemBali and the KKC are transforming the recycle center into showcase of information and solutions on recycling and steps toward zero waste. Through “Kembali in Sekolah”, the initiative has recently been rollout to 06 local schools in Bali, reaching over 4k students. If we consider that the nearly 350 KKC kids enrolled in TFC come from 65 schools, one envisions room for further replicating the initiative with schools that are partner to GS. If we consider at first stage a group of 20 schools, this can mean outreaching over 13,5k kids and an average of 67,5k people, considering their impact in their family. KKC expects that KemBali sustainable platform is rolled to local schools, but also spread out to Banjars all over Indonesia. And the Schools participating in KemBali Sekolah” as they join the initiative, will also become catalyzers to promote such initiative
