Equator Prize 2004: Frequently Asked Questions

1. How do I find out if my community initiative or project is located in an area that is eligible for the award?

Eligible initiatives must be located in a developing country that is located in the Equatorial belt, 23.5º latitude above and below the equator. If the community initiative or project is located in a country that is partially within the Equatorial belt, your community initiative or project must be inside the Equatorial belt.

2. How can I nominate a community initiative or project?

A nomination form and additional information may be obtained in these ways:

3. Must I fill out the nomination form in English?

You may fill out the nomination form in English, French, Portuguese or Spanish.

4. What are the selection criteria for the awards?
Criteria for the awards recipients are the ability to demonstrate:

  • Impact
  • Partnerships
  • Sustainability
  • Innovation and transferability
  • Leadership and community empowerment
  • Gender equality and social inclusion

5. What kinds of community initiatives or projects are eligible?
Innovative projects promoting the sustainable use of biodiversity while alleviating poverty. Projects with emphasis on community partnerships with:

  • Community-based organizations
  • Community-based entrepreneurial initiative
  • Indigenous group
  • Non-governmental organization
  • Initiative associated with UNESCO World Heritage site or other biological reserve
  • Other (Please specify)
