The evening of Wednesday 20 June was the moment we had all been waiting for: the Equator Prize 2012 Award Ceremony! Held at a packed Vivo Rio, a concert hall in downtown Rio de Janeiro, the event was a spectacular success. Celebrating both the 10-year anniversary of the Equator Initiative and the 20-year anniversary of the UNDP/GEF Small Grants Programme, the evening was a vibrant celebration of local sustainable development. UNDP Administrator Helen Clark and UNEP Executive Director Achim Steiner were joined on stage by a host of celebrities and leaders in the field of sustainable development, before the night was concluded by a special performance from renowned Brazilian musician Gilberto Gil. But the real stars, of course, were the 25 prize winners themselves, who took the stage to rapturous applause in recognition of their outstanding achievements.
