Since its inception in 2002, the Equator Initiative has hosted and supported a large number of events in support of community work to achieve the MDGs. These events have explored the community role in protecting the environment and raising incomes and provide a highly substantive backdrop for the many additional advocacy and outreach events that the Equator Initiative organizes each year. Each event has been documented on its own website. We invite you to learn more about these special activities and about the critical role communities play in poverty reduction and biodiversity conservation.
20 October 2011 - Sustainable Energy for All: Challenges and Adaptation in BangladeshThe Equator Initiative hosted a presentation by Mr. Mohammed Rezwan on the work of Shidhulai Swanirvar Sangstha entitled "Sustainable Energy for All: Challenges and Adaptation in Bangladesh." This organisation won the Equator Prize in 2006 in recognition of its work in providing sustainable energy and services to remote rural communities in flood-prone districts of north-western Bangladesh. Rezwan, founder and CEO of Shidhulai, gave a comprehensive overview of the successes of this outstanding initiative in meeting the challenges of climate change and energy poverty.
4 October 2011 - The Yawanawá Community: From the Amazon to Global Markets The Equator Initiative hosted a presentation by Tashka Yawanawá entitled "The Yawanawá Community: From the Amazon to Global Markets," which detailed the community's successes in advocating for change, conserving their indigenous territory, and developing new sources of sustainable energy. The Yawanawá community won the Equator Prize in 2008 in recognition of their sustainable management of over 180,000 hectares of Amazon rainforest in the Brazilian state of Acre.
21 September 2011 - The Nagoya Protocol on Access and Benefit Sharing: The Way Forward The Equator Initiative hosted a brown bag lunch on the Nagoya Protocol on "access to genetic resources and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from their utilization," which was adopted at the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) COP-10 in Nagoya last year. Valérie Normand, Head of the Nagoya Protocol Unit at the CBD, spoke about the future of the Protocol and how its provisions can bring real benefits to local and indigenous communities in the world's poorest countries.
24 May 2011 - Land Rights and Livelihoods: Local and International Responses to Land Grabs Held as a side-event to the Tenth Session of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues, "Land Rights and Livelihoods: Local and International Responses to Land Grabs" focused on the controversial subject of "land grabbing," and drew on the experiences of Ujamaa Community Resource Team (UCRT), a 2008 Equator Prize winner, in advocating for land rights for the indigenous tribes of northern Tanzania.
2 March 2011 - Grassroots Speakout on UN Women Held in conjunction with the 55th session of the Commission on the Status of Women, "Grassrooots Speakout on UN Women," gave grassroots women leaders from around the world the opportunity to come together to share their recommendations and input for the new United Nations entity—UN Women.
