Creating the first regional ecological center of social innovation, which also would allow the promotion of ecological technologies for the sustainable development in Moldova
About the Implementing organization
Name: ACT Ormax
Country: Moldova, Republic of
Year of establishment: 1999
Type of organization: Legally recognized non-profit status
Currently, Republic of Moldova does not have energy resources and is forced to import them, being able to cover from internal sources only a small part of the total consumed energy. At the same time, ecological renewable energy (solar, wind, etc.) is not fully used. Ecological technologies and techniques for the use of ecological renewable energy, soil protection, and protection of drinking water resources (collectors, ovens, solar dryers, wind turbines, Ecosan safe sanitation units, autonomous waste water treatment plants etc.) are not used because these are neither known nor promoted. Increasing community awareness on environmental issues is one of the factors that will lead to improving management of natural resources and solving environmental issues. The experience of previous projects on promoting the use of ecologic renewable energy and protection of natural and water resources implemented by ACT ORMAX and its partners provides significant options for approaching and promoting sustainable development in Moldova. Establishing the first center of social innovation in Moldova is an efficient measure for promoting the new model of sustainable development by consolidating the 3 main pillars (economic, social and ecological) of this paradigm and ensuring a balance between them.
Wetlands / Grasslands
Type of Action
Sustainable use / Access and benefit sharing / Pollution prevention, clean up / Awareness and education
Sustainable Development Element
Health / Renewable energy / Climate action
Agriculture is the main source of economic development and poverty reduction. Environment protection & agricultural promotion must be undertaken in the more complex context of the objective of development of rural communities and environment sustainability via adequate infrastructure, technologies, financial and social services. This means that new policies and strategies should be elaborated integrating all the involved shareholders. For the correct waste management, the project proved that it's possible to use the biogas produces from the household waste which is in big quantities in Moldova. The Albinuta kindergarten from Dominteni village, Drochia district is being considered the first ecological kindergarten from Moldova. Being endowed with solar collector, aiming to protect the environment by the decreased CO2 emissions. The constructed Ecosan toilet allows not to pollute the surface waters and wells' waters, comparing to the existing latrine toilets type in the rural area.
Sustainable Development Impacts
The 1st ec-center of social innovations allows the functioning of the eco-workshops where different innovation and equipment based on renewable energy are being built. Here, students are conducting their practical experience, developing the renewable energy sector useful for rural and urban areas of Moldova. The activities include the construction and installing of solar collectors, solar ovens, and dryers. Its sustainability consists also in the continuous organization of workshops, conferences, training, thematic seminars. the consulting services are at the disposal of motivated people in adopting eco-technologies as a way of economic activity of improvement of their livelihoods. By the construction of solar collectors at the Albinuta kindergarten, Dominteni village, Drochia district— the children and the staff have access to hot water, the sanitation conditions being assured, and the energy expenses have decreased considerably. Also, the built bio-filter allows wastewater treatment.
The main aim of the activities realized within the project "First Regional Ecological Centre of Social Innovation: promotion of ecological technologies for the sustainable development in Moldova", implemented by NGO ORMAX is to influence the population (especially from the rural areas) and local authorities, in accepting the eco-technologies as a solution for a sustainable rural development. The scalability is a long term objective through the intention of creating of national networks and regional branches of the Ecological Center of Social Innovations, through presenting product knowledge, sensitization activities, informative campaigns and so on.
The results of the current project will prove at a national level, that a new sustainable development is possible for rural areas in Moldova namely by promoting environmental technologies. Replication activities will be possible based on the results of the Ecological Centre for Social Innovation by creating of other centers in central and southern areas of Moldova.
Some parts of projects activities implemented within the respective project can be seen as replicated by other NGOs in terms of construction of solar collectors for other households and social objects.
