Environmental Impacts

EkoSfera SEC established "Ecoclubs" in educational institutions operating in Baku and regions under the Ministry of Education since September 2015. The main goal is to expand the ecological movement of young people, to create "green network", to increase the ecological knowledge of schoolchildren, to form special skills and competencies in the field of ecological culture and environmental protection in the younger generation and the exchange of experience. To this end, many forums, seminaries and lectures (e.g. the Ecological Forum) were held. As a result, there is positive trend among the younger generation, which is expressed in their concern about the current environmental condition. Children have become more environmentally friendly and want to make their country and the world cleaner and more sustainable in the future. The impact of this activity on the environment will be clearly visible and traceable in the future. EkoSfera SEC in cooperation with the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Agriculture and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) holds many meetings, trainings and forums with schoolteachers, students and government employees. Institutions, nongovernmental organizations and the private sector. As a result, the impact of this activity on environment is already noticeable. Throughout the country, special bins and garbage cans for sorting rubbish have been installed; restaurants and factories require the installation of special filters in chimneys; taken under protection and preventive work is being carried out on reservoirs, forests, national parks and nature reserves. As a result, a significant improvement in the flora and fauna of the country is noticeable. Hunting is under strict control not only for animals that are threatened with extinction, but also for ordinary animals whose populations are not threatened. This means that the state has begun to think about the future of the biodiversity.

Sustainable Development Impacts

Education(SDG 4) "Environmental Forums" held within 2016-2021 gathered around more than 20,000 students from local educational institutions. In addition, "Green network of environmentally friendly and energy efficient schools" project initiated by the organization, covered 40 secondary schools in Azerbaijan. Gender Equality(SDG 5) Being a women-led organization gives us an extra possibility to highlight the gender issues and produce gender sensitive information. One of the activities of project "Women in Leadership" held in the regions of Azerbaijan increased social status of women in their communities as decision makers. Water Security(SDG 6) Considering that our country is stepping into the water crisis, "Ekosfera" held 20 webinars with the participation of 4000 students on "Efficient Use of Water Resources" Climate Action(SDG 13) "Clean Air for Blue Sky" action drew attention of a wide audience to the transition to clean technologies and alternative energy sources.

RESILIENCE, ADAPTABILITY, AND SELF-SUFFICIENCY

The organization's projects have shown the need for immediate, consistent and coordinated action of joint intersectoral relationships to overcome the economic, social and environmental consequences of the modern world, including during a pandemic. They also pointed to a unique opportunity to not only return economies and societies to normal, but to make them more attractive, resilient and inclusive than before and able to withstand future shocks.

REDUCED INEQUALITIES

"Ekosfera" tries to put a spotlight on fragile social safety nets that leave vulnerable communities to bear the brunt of the crisis. Bearing that in mind, the organization properly takes into consideration people with disabilities, youth indigenous people, women experience violence and etc. All initiatives of the organization are primarily aimed at children and youth audiences, women in distress, single with children, we also pay special attention to children and young people with disabilities, left without parents. The organization regularly holds meeting of expert groups which makes specific policy recommendations on effective fiscal, wage and social protection policies to address inequalities and challenges to social inclusion.

GENDER EQUALITY

Each activity of organization and its initiatives are related to the provision of a decisive role for women, at the very beginning it was very important to listen to the opinion of local communities, urban and rural women about local problems and their solutions. Another important success factor was the variety of training provided to women, especially additional environmental education. Encouraging women's entrepreneurship and helping women take responsibility for their initiatives proved to be a good approach. Environmental education was organized and environmental issues were discussed during the training. A gender perspective has played a significant role in these projects. Women involved in the projects have received a new social status in their schools, communities, as decision makers. They took on new responsibilities in their institutions and communities, and their social and economic situation improved markedly. Also, special attention is paid to the education of girls and the activation of their leadership qualities, entrepreneurial abilities and equality with boys. In addition, our organization is lead by 9 women and pays special attention to the priority on women’s empowerment. Among Active Board members, Key management personnel and Staff we have 70 % women decision-makers.

Scalability

"Ekosfera" adheres to the principle of "Leaving no one behind" and tries the best to spread its activities through the whole country. Involving students from different regions to the "Ecoclubs" is a great example of it. Through the partnership with the international organizations, "Ecosfera" achieved to share its experience and knowledge at the national level. For instance, NGO organized a programme where more than 40 civil society organizations and activists learn and discuss about how they can better contribute to achieve #SDG13 in the country.

Replicability

There are some programmes initiated by the "Ekosfera" and operates in the capital of the city such as "Fundamentals of Ecology" educational module program. There is a high demand for such project in the regions of the country, especially in the industrialized center such as Ganja, Sumgayit, Mingachevir. These programmes can be delegated with the help of 'Ekosfera" and ecological groups operating in the whole country which joined the "Fundamentals of Ecology" program.
