2024 Equator Prize: Community Dialogues and Training
The Equator Initiative Community Dialogues provide a dynamic platform for Indigenous and local leaders from Equator Prize-winning organizations to exchange knowledge, share best practices, and collaborate on sustainable environmental management. These sessions are designed to strengthen participants' leadership skills, showcase their nature-based solutions, and amplify their voices in national and international policy discussions.
In late August and early September 2024, more than 60 representatives from the 2024 Equator Prize-winning initiatives convened virtually for a series of Community Orientation, Dialogues, and Training sessions organized by the UNDP Equator Initiative. Over four days, participants met to participate in discussions, showcase their innovative projects, identify and tackle shared challenges, undergo communication training, and collaboratively craft a unified community statement.
Day 1: Welcome and Setting the Stage
The event began with a warm introduction by Anna Giulia Medri, Team Lead and Partnerships Advisor of the Equator Initiative. This opening session shone a spotlight on the remarkable projects of the winners, whose presentations served as a source of inspiration for the days to come. Attendees were informed about key events on the horizon, including the Nature for Life Hub and the Equator Prize Award Ceremony. They were also given a thorough briefing on the mission and goals of the UNDP Equator Initiative, laying the foundation for the upcoming activities.

Day 2: Mastering Communications
Day 2 centered on refining storytelling and communication skills. Under the guidance of Mr. Ochoa, participants engaged in practical exercises designed to master the art of storytelling, craft compelling elevator pitches, and enhance their presentation techniques. The sessions focused on equipping these leaders with the tools to effectively communicate their organizations' missions, challenges, and impact. Through interactive activities, participants honed their ability to deliver concise, powerful messages, preparing them to elevate their initiatives and voices to a global audience.
Day 3: Storytelling in Action
Building on earlier lessons, participants submitted short elevator pitch videos, which were reviewed together for constructive feedback. Later, Ms. Ervin introduced the concept of the Community Statement—a unified declaration from all 2024 Equator Prize winners. Participants worked in groups to discuss local and global challenges and how they can shape their key messages directed at world leaders.
Day 4: Crafting the Community Statement
On Day 4, participants gathered in breakout rooms to finalize their Community Statement. Ms. Ervin presented a draft that underscored the vital role of Indigenous Peoples and local communities in climate action while calling for stronger legal protections and better resource allocation. The day's discussions focused on shaping the Community Statement to emphasize the enforcement of existing environmental laws, advocate for equitable partnerships between local communities and businesses, and highlight the importance of community-led solutions in tackling global challenges.
