Deskripsi

• AgriCycle Uganda is an organisation which aims at promotion of environmental sustainability through turning agricultural feed stocks/waste such as rice husk, groundnut husk and maize comb into charcoal briquettes which is an alternative source of fuel for cooking other than the use of wood charcoal and firewood and this will help to address the major problem of rampant deforestation

• This is attributed to the LRA insurgency which took place in Northern Uganda for the last two decades which culminated into loss of life’s, destruction of properties, displacement of people, disruption of socio economic activities and consequently accelerating acute poverty and these force many people to resort into burning of wood charcoal as a source of living.

• The organisation also undertake a number of other projects like advocating for afforestation through provision of tree seedling to the farmer groups, socio economic empowerment of the rural poor communities and the farmers to embrace sustainable farming methods, promotion of bio diversity and eco system to mentioned but a few depending on the availability of funding.

• It was therefore against the above background that AgriCycle Uganda was established to address the major problem of rampant deforestation in northern Uganda and Uganda in general by providing an alternative source of fuel for cooking (Charcoal briquettes) other than use of wood charcoal and firewood hence achieving the SDGs of clean and affordable energy, good health and wellbeing, no poverty, zero hunger and climate action. This will promotes environmental sustainability and conservation.

• AgriCyle Uganda therefore, being a legal, knowledgeable, professionally well-organized community based agency with a diversity of cross cutting information well equip and very ready to address the key challenges not only in agro sector transformation but also in the promotion of environmental conservation, preservation and protection as a focus target groupings which seeks logistical reinforcement to engage in spearheading this initiative.

Sustainable Development Impacts

It was established to promote environmental sustainability through provision of alternative cooking fuel (charcoal briquette) from the agricultural feed stocks.
Implementing this project will also promoted bio diversity and ecosystem as the habitat for the wild animals and insects has been maintained.
To promote socio economic empowerment of the poor rural communities as the project implementation has created additional source of income for youth and the women through training on charcoal briquette making and subsequently venturing into charcoal briquette business hence achieving socio-economic empowerment.
It will also create employment opportunities to the youth and the women’s who will be engage in charcoal briquettes production hence improving on their standard of living.

RESILIENCE, ADAPTABILITY, AND SELF-SUFFICIENCY

Availability of raw materials as rice farming is a rapidly growing industry in northern Uganda, being both high-yield and high-value and it is estimated that smallholder farms (2-3 acres) generate 1.3t of waste husk a year and burning this husk through a gasification process can power 6 light bulbs for an entire year e.g. - Rice husk
- Groundnut husk
- Maize comb

Supportive government policies of putting laws against deforestation and encouraging activities that promote environmental conservation has been an added advantage in the implementation of this project.
The willingness of the community to welcome and adopt new technology that adds value to their agricultural outputs. Technical support from the different stakeholders who are very much concerned about promotion of environmental sustainability.

REDUCED INEQUALITIES

To promote socio economic empowerment of the poor rural communities as the project implementation has created additional source of income for youth and the women through training on charcoal briquette making and subsequently venturing into charcoal briquette business hence achieving socio-economic empowerment.
we have also advocated for gender equality through awareness creation and community sensitization.

GENDER EQUALITY

We have well-developed plans and have recruited a strong team of 60% women in the organisation in order to bring these plans to life. We have gone extra mile to ensure that we have competent employees to occupy all the available positions in our organisation.
The picture of the kind of charcoal production organisation we intend to build are based on the goals and objectives which we want to achieve and this will inform the amount we are ready to spend to ensure that we build a standard organisation, dedicated workforce and robust distribution network for our charcoal briquettes to enable us reach out to greater beneficiaries and achieve environmental conservation, preservation and protection.
In view of that, we have decided to hire qualified and competent, enthaustic, self-driven, self-motivated and result oriented technical staffs to occupy the following positions at AgriCycle Uganda.

Project sustainability

The longevity and sustainability of our projects will be enhanced through the following ways.
- Sales revenue generated through sales of our charcoal briquettes will all be reinvested back into the project to help us scale up our production as well as expand the scope of operation and this make the project to sustainable itself for very long period of time.

Sensitization and involvement of both the youth and community members in charcoal briquettes making and general environmental protection will provide room for checks and balances. But most importantly, the youth.

Dapat direplikasi

We use machines that combust agricultural feed stocks into opportunities with major focus on recycling biomass such as rice husk, groundnut husk and maize comb into charcoal briquette for the community at affordable cost as an artificial charcoal other than the one got by burning trees.

However given financial resources, we plan to scale up our production by procuring modern motorized briquettes machines such as:
- Motorized mixer
- Motorized harmer
- Screw extruder"
